Course Description
A survey of the art and architecture of the ancient Roman world which examines origins, development, and the contextual meaning of material culture for the state, the individual and various social groups. Rome's relationship with non-Roman peoples around the Mediterranean basin, Northern Europe and the East will be an important part of the course. We will be considering a wide variety of art forms including architecture, sculpture, painting, glassmaking, ceramics and metalwork.
