Course Description
New York has occupied the center of American financial, cultural, and political life since the Civil War. This course will trace the history of New York City from the early 19th century to the end of the 20th, as it rose to become the preeminent urban center of the United States and, for some, the world. We will look at the city's political, social, and cultural history in all its dimensions, including its service as the primary port of disembarkation for European immigrants, its role as a cultural capital and its history as a center of political dissent.
