Course Description
This course explores the rise, fall, and memory of the great Mongol empire. Students will read not only about the Mongols themselves, but also about the many cultures and countries that the Mongols conquered, and we will analyze those fraught cross-cultural encounters through primary and secondary source materials. We will also look at how the overwhelmingly negative portrayal of the Mongols has evolved over time, and students will look at the way Genghis Khan is depicted in films and monuments.
