Course Description
An introduction to the study of literary genres thematically anchored in the intersection of gender dynamics, national politics, and the construction of identity (sexual, cultural, national). Students will read narrative, poetry, and drama from Spain, Spanish- America, and U.S. Latino communities. Theoretical readings and diverse critical approaches to literature frame the course around the portrayal of romantic/sexual relationships that acquire broader dimensions when scrutinized from the perspective of gender and national politics. How are gender and sexual identities inscribed in national identity? How cultural artifacts project and reflect the gendered body of the nation?
